Heaven and Hell*
There is no Writing
On the Wall
there is no
Wishing Well
There is no Sin
Original
Nor no Heaven
nor Hell
Groveling before
A just God
is but gratuitous
You must know
So if you care
to be righteous:
Here is how
it must Show
Be Kind, be Good
to One And All
let callow
superstitions go
And if there be
a God
let it come
as a blest surprise
And if there be
Not
then let it go -
Let Virtue
be your Prize!
* Written with a mild sense of fatigue with the manner of the (self)righteous, that abound, near-bursting with specious ‘faith’ , but sans half an ounce of demonstrable , genuine, humanity to them. To their ilk , I commend an old poem by Leigh Hunt titled “Abou Ben Adhem”: they might find it instructive.
